The Games of the XXXII Olympiad will open in Tokyo on July 23 and conclude on August 8, 2021. This will be the second time that Tokyo has hosted the summer Olympics. The first time was in 1964. The Israeli delegation to Tokyo 2021 will be the largest yet, comprised of approximately 80 athletes.
The Israeli national baseball team will participate in the Tokyo games, marking the first time in 44 years that a team sport is represented, the last time being the national Israeli soccer team, which played at the 1976 Montreal Olympics. Six countries will be playing in the baseball competition.
Israel will also be sending an equestrian team for the first time ever. And an Israeli athlete will be competing in the new Olympic sport of surfing.
Over the years, Israel has experienced numerous Olympic successes, but there have also been anomalous negative events, such as the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich, where 11 members of the Israeli delegation were murdered. Nonetheless, Israel has continued to participate in the Olympic Games, and has even had impressive achievements.
To date, eight Israeli athletes have won a combined total of nine Olympic medals:
Yael Arad – silver; Oren Smadja – bronze: Barcelona 1992.
Gal Fridman – bronze: Atlanta 1996.
Michael Kalganov – bronze: Sydney 2000.
Gal Fridman – gold; Ariel Zeevi – bronze: Athens, 2004.
Shahar Tzuberi – bronze: Beijing, 2008.
Yarden Gerbi – bronze; Or Sasson – bronze: Rio de Janeiro, 2016.
It disappeared for a number of years but returned in 1912 and has appeared at every Summer Olympic Games since.
The current Olympic equestrian disciplines are Jumping, Dressage (artistic riding) and Eventing (a 3-day competition that includes a cross-country course).
In each discipline, both individual and team medals are awarded. This is the only sport in which women and men compete together on equal terms. The minimum age for riders is 18, but there is no maximum age limitation.
Equestrian disciplines and the equestrian component of Modern Pentathlon are also the only Olympic events that involve animals. The horse is considered as much of an athlete as the rider.
Israel will be represented for the first time at the Olympic Games in Tokyo, with an equestrian team of three riders.

Rhythmic Gymnastics is a leading Olympic sport, under the auspices of the Israel Gymnastics Federation. It is one of the most popular fields in gymnastics, and it became an Olympic sport in 1984.
The glass ceiling was broken in 2011 when Neta Rivkin and the group team won Israel’s first medals at the world championships. Since then, Israel’s strength in the international arena has continued to grow and to date Israel holds 17 medals from world championships, 11 of which were won by Israel’s leading gymnast and highest medal holder – Linoy Ashram.
In 2020, Linoy Ashram and the group team became the European champions, another record–breaking achievement.
Israel will be represented at the 2021 Olympic Games in Tokyo by individual gymnasts Linoy Ashram and Nicol Zelikman as well as by the group team, which includes Karin Vexman, Yana Kramarenko, Ofir Dayan, Bar Shapochnikov, Shai Ben Ruby and Yuliana Telegin.
