Article - Memorial Day
From the prayer “O G-d full of mercy” in memory of the members of the Israel Defense Forces who have fallen in war.
O G-d, full of mercy
O G-d full of mercy, Who dwells on high, grant proper rest on the wings of the Divine Presence in the lofty levels of the holy, the pure and the valiant who shine and gleam like the glow of the firmament –
For the souls of the members of the Israel Defense Forces who have fallen in war, in defense operations, in retaliatory and security actions and while carrying out their military duties –
And for the souls of the fallen in all the underground operations and struggles of the people together with the men and women in the intelligence and security services who gave their lives in the Holy Cause – and with G-d’s help brought about the establishment and liberation of Israel and the liberation of G-d’s city.
The First-Day Cover features a quotation from Chaim Weizmann, the first President of the State of Israel: “No country is given to people on a silver platter”. Poet Natan Alterman used this quotation as the motto for his renowned work “The Silver Platter”, which was first published in the “Davar” daily newspaper in December 19, 1947.
The poem was written in honour of those who gave their lives in the struggle for the establishment of the State and, in dying, constituted the “silver platter” on which the State of the Jews was given.
The flora shown on the stamp is an olive tree branch symbolizing peace.
