FESTIVALS 5714 (1953)

The holy ark is a receptacle placed on the eastern wall of the synagogue, in which the scrolls of the Torah are kept. The ark is one of the focal features of the synagogue, often richly embellished with various ornamental designs. Many are decorated with ornamental tablets with the Ten Commandments in abbreviation. The Sephardic arks have a decorative curtain hanging inside, while it hangs outside the Ashkenazi ones. Various arks have become museum artifacts over the world, while others attract visitors to their synagogues to view their artistic elegance, old and modern alike.

These three stamps depict ornate arks found in Israel - in Jerusalem, Petah Tikvah, and Zefat (Safed). The Hebrew inscription on the bottom of the stamps reads: "Joyous Festivals 5714" and the tabs quote Zechariah 8:19: "... Joy and gladness, and cheerful feasts...".
