HERZL 1954 - 50 YEARS SINCE HIS DEATH

Theodor Herzl, known as the founder of political Zionism, died in Edlach (Austria) in 1904, having suffered of a weak heart. The controversy over the Uganda Plan (a plan for Jewish settlement in Uganda, to which Herzl objected - claiming Palestine to be the only homeland for the Jews) did little for his poor health and he died before the dispute had been resolved. Herzl’s remains were reinterred in Jerusalem in 1949.

This stamp was issued in 1954 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Herzl’s death. The Hebrews inscription on the tab reads: "Dr. Benjamin Ze’ev Herzl - 50th Anniversary of his Death". Also on the tab is the emblem of the first Zionist Congress, which took place in Basle in 1897 on the initiative of Theodor Herzl.
