INDEPENDENCE DAY

INDEPENDENCE DAY -  6 (1954)

YEHI’AM

Kibbutz Yehi’am was founded in 1946 on mountain terrain near the ruins of a 12th-century crusader castle, Judin. The ruins were used as a fort during the War of Independence when the isolated kibbutz managed to survive against overwhelming odds and was under siege until May 1948.

The castle remains appear on the stamp with flowers in the foreground.

GESHER

South of Degania, the medieval bridge of Gesher, crosses the Jordan. Kibbutz Gesher is situated near the confluence of the Jordan and Yarmuk rivers. In Israel’s War of Independence, Gesher withstood heavy bombardment by the Arabs in their attempt to pass over the Jordan in order to proceed to Haifa.

The medieval bridge appears on the stamp, with daffodils in the foreground.
