CONQUEST OF THE DESERT
n 1953 Israel sponsored its first major exhibition as an independent state. The Conquest of the Desert International Exhibition and Fair was dedicated to the reclamation and population of desert regions. Held at the Jerusalem Convention Center, it attracted over 500,00 people. Participants included UNESCO and the World Health Organization as well as Israel government ministries, the Jewish National Fund, and many organizations and companies from Israel and 21 foreign countries.
The stamp depicts the exhibition emblem, a hand, clutching a flower, rising from the desert. The inscription is: "The Conquest of the Desert". The same motif appears on the tab with the inscription: "Jerusalem 1953".
