FESTIVALS 5757 (1996)
Three of Sahar Pick’s paintings are depicted on these stamps.
A bowl of honey and two lighted candles, elements of Rosh Hashana, the New Year festival, are shown on the stamp. Before the festive meal, challa (bread) and apple are dipped in the honey and a prayer is said to symbolize renewal and a sweet New Year.
The stamp for the Sukkot festival shows decorations of the Sukkah (a temporary booth recalling the booths that the Children of Israel lived in following the Exodus from Egypt). It is a religious commandment to eat and sleep in the Sukkah for the seven days of the festival, and the decorations make for a pleasant holiday atmosphere.
The Simchat Torah stamp shows a colorful illustration of the inside of a synagogue during the Torah reading, with the pulpit, open Torah scroll raised up high and colorful lights shining overhead.
